Two Arunachalee students assaulted in Chennai

Taba Ajum

ITANAGAR, Mar 5: Few days after Arunachalee students were severely thrashed at Bangalore by locals, new report of attack against Arunachalee students have emerged from Chennai, where two students reportedly received serious injuries after they were attacked by locals. According to the report, the incident took place yesterday inside the campus of Vinayaka Mission University, Chennai.

While talking to this daily over phone from Chennai, one of the students informed that Arunachalee students were beaten up without any provocation.

“Around evening time two Arunachalee students had come to the university ground to play football. After parking bike, when they were about to enter university football ground, four locals who were not even students of the university started abusing them. First they asked silly question like why are you riding bike in high speed and then they afterwards asked Arunachalee boys to get cigarette and beer for them,” told a student.  He further added, “Our boys could not bear the insult and this led to verbal argument. Later more number of locals arrived and they brutally attacked our students with sharp weapons. We immediately sought help from two nearby police stations. But they did not help us citing that complaint has to come from university authorities. Even private security guards posted at university did not come to our rescue.”   Just before filing of this report, one of the injured students was reported to have been shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his condition got deteriorated. As per the report, he received severe head injuries because of the attack by lethal weapons.

This is the fourth major case of attack against Arunachalee students being reported from Southern India. Usually South India is considered to be safer place to pursue higher study as  compared to rest of India. Also majority of technical colleges are based in South India. Last year students were beaten up at an engineering college in Gulbarga and Polytechnic college in Chennai. Similarly few days ago Arunachal students were assaulted at Bhuvan Polytechnic College, Bangalore. In most cases it has been noticed that students were severely attacked by locals on minor issues. There is growing feeling that such incident can no longer be treated as isolated case and it needs to be seriously addressed.

“Whenever an Indian is attacked at Australia mainland politicians and media make huge outcry. They term it as racist attack. Here we are treated like second class citizen in our country and often get attacked but mainland media never reports it,” shared a student studying at Delhi.

There is urgent need to take up such cases seriously for the safety of the students.

Malnutrition & child health

Policy brief Zero child hunger: breaking the cycle of malnutrition have showed that increased household income and better diets improve children’s nutritional status.

The evidence shows that nutrition-focused agricultural interventions are short term and cannot address the root causes of malnutrition like chronic poverty and maternal health. While such interventions may increase income from one source, they can also result in reduced income from other sources which may mean no change in overall buying power.

Agricultural interventions to tackle malnutrition are not reaching the poorest and those most at risk to chronic hunger such as orphans and other vulnerable children.  Many development agencies believe that fortifying foods with vitamins and minerals is a cost- and time-effective way to tackle malnutrition, but more studies showing positive impact are needed for justifying further investment in such programmes.

Six million children die of hunger every year. Over 40% of children under five in countries such as Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Nepal and Niger are stunted. Children that do survive are more likely to have heart disease, diabetes and renal damage.

Let the people know

Dear Editor,

The news items under the headline “Ruksin PRI unhappy ………and “PRI leader refute …….” respectively that appeared on February  20 and  27 editions drew my attention.

In this connection, I would like to clarify that my speech delivered at the public meeting at Community Hall, Ngorlung on School Inauguration Day have been taken out of context.

Two Primary Schools upgraded from EGS under SSA Scheme, at Ngorlung and Ralung village were inaugurated by MLA, Dr. T. Tapak and DDSE, T. Talom on the day which was followed by a public meeting in the Community Hall.

Being ZPM of Ruksin Anchal Block, I appealed to the MLA to bring more visible development in the area in the days ahead by judiciously using the MLA LADs and any other funds given by the State and the Central Govt.

The news reporter should have covered the whole event of the day including the speech of the MLA.

It is seen that the reporter has gathered views of some PRI leaders and linked it in the said news item which gave the impression that the PRI leaders of Ruksin Block are engaged in finding fault in the MLA’s role.  But I, personally, had no such malafide intensions and we do not organize such meetings against the MLA.

Interestingly, some PRI leaders with vested interest, in reply to the aforesaid news item, had mentioned my name without any thought in their press statements that appeared on February 27 edition under the heading “PRI leaders refute allegation”.

This kind of blame game played by those PRI leaders has created a situation which has compelled me to highlight implementation of some schemes like Rural Housing, Rural Electrification etc. in our area.

The truth is that the recent selection of 150 beneficiaries under Ruksin – Bilat IRP Block in the on going Rural Housing Scheme under SPA have been done even without constituting a board wherein the ZPM is one of the members in the board.

It is learnt that under the said Rural Housing Scheme the beneficiaries have been selected by some political ‘chamchas’ of MLA Dr. T. Tapak, where the PRI leaders were not involved.

Hence, the selection was unfair, and poorest of the poor people were deprived. This is a total violation of guidelines and rules of the schemes, and this is one of the instances going on at Ruksin area in implementation of Rural Development Scheme.

I feel pity that those PRI leaders are not aware of the powers and responsibilities which they are supposed to exercise.

So, I sincerely request them not to release useless press release in near future. As a matter of fact, we cannot conceal the truth and let the people know the reality.

Yours,

Tonggeng Panyang

Roman script is an option

Dear Editor,

The recent news about an organisation demanding for the institutionalization of the so called 'Tani Lipi' as the third language of the state, and the government committing to do so makes for some interesting observations.

First of all, it seems to exhibit an utter lack of understanding of the language and culture of the state by both parties. What is the Tani Lipi 'language'? Which community speaks it? What is overlooked is that Tani Lipi is not a language but a script which was created out of the thin air just a few years back as a script for the Tani languages. So, how do you purport to make a 'script' into the third 'language' of the state?

Secondly, the so called Tani Lipi script, with due respect to its inventor, is one man's imagination and creative output. Scripts (Roman, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Chinese etc) have taken thousands of years to attain their present shape, influenced by social, cultural, historical and linguistic changes and developments. For Tani Lipi to be actually 'Tani' it would have to have all of the above. But does it?

Thirdly, why at all go for an unfamiliar, unwieldy, impractical, invented script when we can choose one already in use by slightly modifying it for our requirements. Why let a ridiculous sense of tribalism waste our time and resource and harm  our native languages in the long run? The Khasis and Mizos use modified Roman scripts: their languages are studied from the primary to the university level, newspapers are in their own language, their literature is vibrant. And meanwhile we have this argument in A.P.

Fourthly, this whole rigmarole once again brings into stark relief how little thinking process goes into the demands of our organisations and the promises of our political leaders.

Time to start thinking Arunachal.

Yours,

Agupota

Allegations against doctor baseless

Dear Editor,

Apropos the news under heading “Fresh allegation of Govt land...” published in your daily on March 3 issue, I on behalf of Nabam Welfare Society (NWS), strongly condemn the baseless allegation leveled against Dr. Jadav Nabam, Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeon, by the so called Integrated Youths Guild to Save Arunachal Capital (IYGSAC).

We have conducted thorough inquiry into the matter in entire capital complex on the basis of the press release issued by the so called  IYGSAC to find out the existence of the organization as well as locate its office bearers. We have also informed it to the members of Yangfo and Kipa clans residing in capital complex about the president and general secretary of this fictitious organization to ascertain that whether such persons really exist in their clans. But none of the clan members knows about the presence of such president and general secretary as mentioned in the press release of IYGSAC.

Hence, it is crystal clear from this that the press release was issued with a malafide intention to tarnish the image of the sincere and dutiful upcoming young doctor and create communal disharmony among some certain clans residing in capital.

If any such president (of IYGSAC) exists, I on behalf of NWS cordially invite him to clarify the statement with their signature jotted down in the complaint letter.

Land encroachment is a problem not only in capital complex but in entire state. Instead of singling out any individual, a responsible organization should raise voice against all who have encroached government land.

Dr. Jadav Nabam has been performing his duty with utmost sincerity and dedication which can be learned from his performance records available in Arunachal State Hospital, Naharlagun.

With regards to private practice, examining and treating the ailing patient coming to doctor’s residence is not a sin. If a doctor does private practice neglecting his duty then it is absolutely wrong and stringent action should be taken against such doctor. But if a doctor examine and treat a patient in their extra time after the duty hours what is wrong with it?  Why do not you tell the sick people or the mass to stop going to private clinics. We just can not comment on it. There is competent authority to look after them. Who knows, the fictitious president of IYGSAC might be the frequent visitors of private hospital or doctor’s chamber.

Yours,

Nabam Jallow

Chairman, NWS, Itanagar

CM Talent Award Scheme 2011

Dear Editor,

This clarification is issued with reference to a few letters from readers that have appeared in some newspapers over the delay in disbursal of cash award and laptops to meritorious topper students under the CM Talent Award Scheme 2011.

While accepting the delay, it is submitted that it was purely due to non-submission of full lists of topper students from the Districts. As a bulk order for laptops was to be placed, it could not be done unless the exact numbers were known. As an instance, the list of students from Kurung Kumey District has not been received till date. This was the first year of the launch of the scheme and hence it took some time for the first-time issues to be sorted out. Even now, only about 50% of the applications received from the Districts are in order and complete in all respects and the remaining are being returned to the respective Deputy Commissioners for correcting the errors.

The State Govt. remains fully committed to the cause of identifying and promoting talent amongst the meritorious students, who are our biggest asset. It is the commitment of the Planning Department that the cash award, in respect of complete applications would be released through the concerned Deputy Commissioners within March 2012 and the laptops would be awarded within the month of April 2012.

Yours,

Ankur Garg

Clarification

Dear Editor,

Apropos the news item published on March 3 issue of your daily leveling unfounded allegations against Dr. Nabam Jadav by the so called Integrated Youths Guild to Save Arunachal Capital (IYGSAC), I would like to clarify that I had never written any letter against Dr. Nabam. Further, I am not associated with the so called IYGSAC. I am astonished and shocked to learn that my name has been unnecessarily used in the allegation against Dr. Nabam by some obsessive persons with an evil intention to harm the dignity of the reputed surgeon of the state. By doing so, the so called organization has not only defamed my name in the society but also entire Yangfo community.

I also object to your esteemed daily for entertaining the press release in your daily without having proper address and contact numbers of the complainants.

Yours,

Sama Yangfo

Polo Colony, Naharlagun.
